I found this interesting because this medical method was exactly the same way that the ancient Greeks said that Zeus incubated Dionysus when his mother was prematurely killed. Well except Zeus kept Dionysus in his thigh but same difference.
The earliest descriptions of Dionysus describe him as an older man with a beard and the kind of look that goes along with that. But I enjoyed the later descriptions of Dionysus where he is called "man-womanish" and is described to be more of a young beautiful androgynous type. I like that idea better and I also feel a nonconforming look better suits a diety type.

Written Intro:

Most of my research was centred around Dionysus; The greek god of wine, wine-making, grape harvest, ritual madness, and religious ecstasy. I found out that he basically rules over all the most fun things. He had several annual festivals dedicated to him, and people would party hard in his name. That's basically the ritual madness section.
I also looked into his origin myth, and it turns out that his father was Zeus and his mother was a mortal, yet he is considered to be one of the OG 12 Olympians. He wasn't considered a demigod like Achilles or Hercules, and this was because of the unusual circumstance of his birth. See, when Hera found out about Zeus being unfaithful she forced him into revealing his true form to the mortal and he inadvertently killed the mortal. Luckily Zeus was a quick thinker and he saved the baby and kept him sewn into his thigh, incubated Dionysus for a few months until he was born for a second time. This time as a full god!
When I told my roommate what I was reading and she told me that doctors actually do that now. Through the miracle of modern medicine, Doctors have successfully kept appendages alive by sewing it to the groin kinda thigh area. They have successfully saved those bits! Just like the old Gods :-)
